Dawn Norton is head of the Labour Law Department at MHA. Dawn has a BA (Hons) LLB and an LLM degree in Labour Law (with distinction) from the University of the Witwatersrand. Dawn was articled at Cheadle Thompson and Haysom Inc, and was admitted as an attorney in 1999. She has been practicing law from the time of her admission. In 2006 she joined MHA Inc. as a director.
She has extensive experience representing clients particularly in dismissal and unfair labour practice disputes at the CCMA and initiating or opposing reviews in the Labour Court. Dawn also has experience in legislative drafting and has, among others, participated in drafting the regulations to the Labour Relations Act, 1995 and some of the regulations to the Skills Development Act, 1998.
Dawn regularly chairs disciplinary enquiries, and prosecutes misconduct, poor work performances and incapacity hearings. She advises on S189 retrenchments.
Dawn has authored numerous articles published in the South African Labour Bulletin (SALB), Contemporary Labour Law Journal (CLL) and Industrial Law Journal (ILJ). Dawn was an acting judge in the Labour Court for brief stints in 2015 and 2019.
